School Nutrition Association
School Nutrition Association

ASFSA has been advancing the availability, quality and acceptance of school nutrition programs as an integral part of education since 1946. The association strives to see that all children have access to healthful school meals and nutrition education.

The primary activities of the association are:

  • Providing education and training
  • Setting standards through certification and credentialing
  • Gathering and transmitting regulatory, legislative, industry, nutritional and other types of information related to school nutrition
  • Representing the nutritional interests of all children.

Recognized as the authority on school nutrition programs, ASFSA has 52 state affiliates, hundreds of local chapters and over 60,000 members. The School Food Service Foundation, an affiliate of ASFSA, plays a critical role in child nutrition by raising money for professional development and certification courses, as well as providing members with scholarship opportunities.

Our advocacy of child nutrition programs has made a real difference in recent years: when Congress proposed to convert funding for child nutrition programs into block grants, ASFSA members successfully lobbied to retain the programs as they were originally intended.

We bring a unique, firsthand perspective to child nutrition issues. Learn more about our legislative efforts in child nutrition through the 2000 Legislative Issue Paper.

As a part of ASFSA's mission to develop and encourage the highest standards and professional development for school foodservice and nutrition personnel, we have developed certification and credentialing programs to achieve this purpose. The Revised Certification and New Credentialing Programs contain the standards and specifications needed for personnel to serve quality food and provide nutrition education services to America’s children.
